Jo’s got jazz (and soul)

Jo Harrop – based in London but originally from Durham – has, over a five album career, established herself as one of the most feted voices in jazz. She’s playing The Glasshouse this September.

Many reviewers agree that Jo Harrop’s latest album ‘The Path of A Tear’ is her best yet. I’m not arguing. Released earlier this year it’s an album she recorded in LA with one of the greats, Larry Klein, the much-lauded producer who has worked with superstars such as Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock and Madeleine Peyroux. Klein puts Harrop’s extraordinary voice centre stage, and she’s backed by a tight bunch of session musicians for a suite of songs that ooze contemporary jazz sophistication. But the depth of emotion she manages to convey – let’s call it soul – is what sets her apart from other singers. And it should be noted that she also penned most of the tracks, all of which weave a potent spell on listeners. The three covers are also show-stoppers including a fabulous take on Leonard Cohen’s ‘Travelling Light’. These are tracks that demand to be heard live, and, luckily, you’ll get the chance to do just that when she visits Gateshead this September. GM
