This is SOFT PLAY’s first album since they changed their name from Slaves, and it’s glaring proof that they have gone anything but soft. HEAVY JELLY is a 30 minute white knuckle ride through 11 extremely strong tracks - you’ll find no skips on this one. It’s angry, witty, and, at times, downright hilarious with ‘Bin Juice Disaster’ definitely being the best song title I’ve come across so far this year. The lyrics are topical without being too on the nose, while sonically it stays true to the band’s roots while boasting layers of creativity. HEAVY JELLY marks an exciting new era for SOFT PLAY, who are proving that punk is alive and well. LT
