The Crime is Mine
Stars: Nadia Tereszkiewicz, Rebecca Marder, Isabelle Huppert, Fabrice Luchini, Dany Boon, Édouard Sulpice
François Ozon's latest is a frothy but fun comedy noir loosely adapted from the 1934 play ‘My Crime’ by Georges Berr and Louis Verneuil. Madeline (Tereszkiewicz, recently seen in bearded lady biopic ‘Rosalie’), is a struggling actress in Paris who shares an apartment with lawyer friend Pauline (Marder). Her lover André (Sulpice) the son of a wealthy tire manufacturer who Madeline was hoping would propose to her, announces he is to marry an heiress. After Madeline attends a meeting with film producer Montferrand for an audition he tries to rape her. She flees and later he is found dead. Pauline agrees to represent Madeline in the subsequent trial where they decide on an unusual approach, and the actress must give her greatest performance. It’s a bagatelle but jolly good fun with all the ensemble cast clearly having a blast, with Isabelle Huppert’s divaish actress and Fabrice Luchini's dogged and eccentric highlights judge the standouts. And Constance Allain and Pascaline Chavanne’s costume design is a dream.
