This Guy’s got the blues

Multi-instrumentalist Guy Davis has had back-to-back nominations for Best Traditional Blues artist at the Grammy Awards, and he’s bringing his authentic sound to both Newcastle and Barnard Castle this October and November.

Guy Davis is the son of actors Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, so it’s no surprise that as well as being the “real deal” when it comes to the blues, he’s also a real acting talent. Indeed, back in the 90s he portrayed blues legend Robert Johnson in the off-Broadway show ‘Robert Johnson: Trick the Devil’, and in the process became the recipient of the Blues Foundation’s ‘Keeping the Blues Alive Award’ (along with a raft of rave reviews). His acting chops probably help with his enormous stage presence, too, as he effortlessly blends the blues with roots, folk, rock, rap, spoken word and world music to stunning effect. At ease on six or twelve string guitar – along with banjo, harmonica and even didgeridoo – Davis has performed alongside everyone from Bruce Springsteen to Chuck Berry, Joan Armatrading to BB King. His shows feature a mix of his own material alongside classics from luminaries such as Howlin’ Wolf, Bob Dylan and Muddy Waters, and it’s great to have him back in the region once again. GM
