Carry on up the jungle

Nia Archives reignited the jungle scene earlier this year with her box-fresh ‘Silence is Loud’ album, and she’ll be bringing all those fizzy beats to Newcastle when she plays NX on Halloween night.

I’ve already begun to scratch out and add titles to my own personal Album Of The Year list for 2024. But since it crashed quite gloriously into my life this spring, one album has been set in stone on that list and that’s Nia Archives’ astonishing ‘Silence is Loud’. She’s a Yorkshire lass who wasn’t around when jungle was at its height in the 90s, but on this release, she’s taken those clattering beats and added her own spin on proceedings to take in everything from Britpoppy style anthems to alt-rock to Motown-esque flourishes to four-to-the-floor kick drums. It’s also an album teaming with fantastic melodies, all of which are aided by her strong vocal attack and some nicely salty lyrical concerns. She’s already supported the likes of Beyoncé (on her Renaissance World Tour where many of the crowd, admittedly, didn’t know what to make of her) and while her stuff is certainly big enough to start a party in an arena, you’re better off checking her out in venues such as NX if you get the chance.
