More Mali

Coinciding with ‘Mali Morris: Returning’ at the Hatton Gallery, Gallagher & Turner are showing selected works on paper by the artist, alongside sculptures by Stephen Lewis.

I adore this vibrant piece from Mali Morris (‘Edge of a Portrait’ 1994, pictured) and you can see it in all its glory at this stunning show, which also takes in some sculptures by Stephen Lewis. Morris explains that these works are autonomous paintings, not studies, and relate to some of the larger paintings on canvas on show at the Hatton Gallery. The series was inspired in part by her love of the Profile Portraits of the Italian Renaissance; colour relationships building a luminosity that glows. Lewis’s work, meanwhile, compliment the paintings in that they also have a sense of animation; a musicality. DP

Morris & Lewis / REAL WORK: Paintings & Sculpture, until 2 November, Gallagher & Turner, Newcastle, gallagherandturner.co.uk
