‘Short n’ Sweet’ has seen Carpenter rise to astronomical heights seemingly out of nowhere, despite this being her fifth album. She has definitely found her sweet spot as an artist - fun, flirty pop anthems charged with a wicked, at times filthy, sense of humour - but I do think she’s chosen her single releases wisely. The rest of the album inevitably gets lost among ‘Taste’, ‘Please Please Please’ and ‘Espresso’, but landing three huge pop hits in one album is an incredible feat in itself. Honourable mentions go to country crooner ‘Slim Pickins’ and the sultry, slow tempo of ‘Bed Chem’, both of which prove she’s a versatile artist with an impressive vocal talent. LT
