We wish you a Mary Christmas…

One of the UK’s foremost wildlife artists Mary Ann Rogers is mulling wine as we speak – just so she can welcome visitors to her gallery with the correct amount of festive bonhomie.

Mary Ann Rogers’ annual open days – in the run up to Christmas – are always well attended and with little wonder. They’re amazing and exude the kind of vibes that never fail to give you that yuletide tingly feeling. Held in her own glorious gallery, they are the perfect chance to browse her original paintings, along with prints, cards and other unique gift ideas (including tote bags, sketchbooks, iPhone cases, travel mugs and waterbottles) – basically the kind of original stuff you’re never going to find in the hustle and bustle of John Lewis. Mary Ann Rogers takes daily treks around the hills where she lives – and is partial to a bit of open water swimming (brr!) – and is inspired by the dramatic countryside of the Rede Valley and its ever-changing colours and light, along with the sheep, cattle, pheasants, guinea fowl, ducks and chickens she meets. Being so immersed in the landscape means that her work is utterly alive and sings out with her love for our region, its magnificent views, and nature in general. A warm welcome awaits visitors to her open weekends this November and December, along with that all-important mulled wine and a mince pie or two.

Mary Ann Rogers’ Christmas Open Days, Friday 22-Sunday 24 November; Saturday 30 November & Sunday 1 December; Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 December; 10am-5pm, free. Mary Ann Rogers Gallery, West Woodburn, Hexham, NE48 2SE. More info: marogers.com
