‘Cutouts’ is The Smile’s second album in just nine months, so they’d be perhaps forgiven if it didn’t quite hit the same mark as January’s ‘Wall Of Eyes’, which came out to much critical acclaim. On the contrary, I may even prefer this third release from The Smile, which is Radiohead’s Thom York and Johnny Greenwood’s collaboration with percussionist Tom Skinner. ‘Cutouts’ is funky, experimental and a real sonic journey to get lost in, with flavours of jazz and psychedelia weaving through woozy beats, jittery guitar riffs and driving percussion. Playful, upbeat music from the minds behind Radiohead…who would’ve thunk it? LT
