Altered Images at Pop Recs

In 1983, Altered Images released their meisterwerk ‘Bite’ produced by the legendary Tony Visconti (David Bowie/T Rex) and Mike Chapman (Blondie). Unfortunately, barring a few American dates, they split up and the world was unable to appreciate its inherent beauty. In 2024 however Clare and the band announced a 40th anniversary (plus one) tour. As Clare admitted ‘We were always late to the party!’

The magnificent intimacy of Sunderland’s Pop Recs was the setting for their only north-east date and the band produced two amazing sets. The first was ‘Bite’ in all its chronological glory including the epic, groove laden singles ‘Don’t Talk To Me About Love’ and ‘Bring Me Closer’ and the equally sublime never played live before ‘Love To Stay’ and ‘Thinking About You’.

After a short break, the band ran through a short, greatest hits set including classic singles like ‘I Could Be Happy’ and ‘Dead Pop Stars’ (dedicated to fan and mentor John Peel and Siousxie). A few great choices from their 2022 ‘Mascara Streakz’ album including the Bernard Butler co-written ‘Glitter Ball’ and a celebratory ‘Happy Birthday’ brought the gig to a fabulous close for the sell out crowd.

 An absolutely perfect evening.
