Red Alert!
I love this piece by Samba – an artist collective made up of three women who went back to university to study Fine Art in their 50s in order to fulfil their childhood dreams of becoming artists. And you can see it – and more of their incredible work – at Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery in a show entitled ‘Precarious’, which explores conflict and the precariousness of the survival of our planet (runs until 13 December). And this is just one of three shows currently running at the gallery with the others being ‘Michael Sreenan: You Look Like You’ (the photographer suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2021 and this show explores his thoughts and experiences of the recovery project – until 13 December) and the ‘Redcar Affordable Art Fair’ (in which all works cost under £100 with many coming in at under £50 – until 13 December). The gallery is home to the Redcar Contemporary Art Group, and they also host all manner of art classes including instruction in abstract painting, oil painting, mixed-media work, botanical painting and more besides. Situated on the seafront, this place is a real gem (and dog-friendly!) and if you’ve not yet had the pleasure, then I’d recommend a visit forthwith. JL
