My god, Amyl and The Sniffers deliver with this one. There’s plenty of the Aussie rebellion that first demonstrated how they’re keeping modern punk alive - bouncing guitar riffs, groovy bass lines, thunderous percussion and provocative lyrics delivered via Amy Taylor’s signature, firecracker vocals. However, ‘Cartoon Darkness’ delves into more melodic, sincere territories, with rare appearances of Taylor’s singing voice and heartfelt lyrics on topics like ambition and heartbreak lending a newfound softness to their sound. The fact they can simultaneously write rage-filled anthems with lyrics like “keep jerking on your squirter cause you’ll never get with me” is all you need to know about how versatile they are. LT
