Prohibited acts…
Prohibition Cabaret Bar are celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2025, and judging by their line-up for January it looks as though they’re moving into the new year with every intention of letting the good times roll.
Prohibition Cabaret Bar came into being in 2015, in a railway arch in a cobbled back street of Gateshead, but in 2019 they upped sticks and headed into Newcastle, setting up shop in the iconic former home of the Jazz Café on Pink Lane. And the move certainly paid off because Prohibition is now one of those independent venues that – far removed from the identikit chains – give Newcastle its identity. On the music front they cater for fans of jazz, blues, folk, soul, swing, bluegrass, roots etc and have free gigs every Friday and Saturday (free!). They also stage a regular burlesque night along with music hall stuff, drag, comedy, magic, theatre and vaudeville. What else? LGBTQ+ friendly, dog friendly, and fully accessible? You got it! And they’re kicking off their 10th anniversary year in fine style with a January programme that is packing wonderments. You can check their full listings on their website, but I’d particularly like to pick out the following. On Sunday 12 January they’ve got the brilliant blues guitarist Dave Bottomley. Playing classic blues (think Robert Johnson, Blind Blake and Roy Bookbinder) this fella has got talent to burn. Then, on Saturday 18 January, do not miss The Delta Prophets. With Paul Allan on rhythm guitar and vocals, Den Fisher on lead guitar, and Antonio Moneva on harmonica, this trio play classic jazzy blues with a swing feel. One of the venue’s all-time favourites returns on Sunday 19 January in the shape of Tenement Jazz Band. This Edinburgh bunch never fail to get audiences out of their seats and their swing sound is as joyous as it comes. Making their debut at the venue on Thursday 30 January is folk duo Mills and Farrell. This Canadian duo recently moved to the region but have already won a following thanks to appearances at both the Crossing the Tyne Festival and Edinburgh Fringe. Finally, on Friday 31 January, the outstanding duo Nothing in Rambling (pictured) will be lighting up Prohibition with their authentic early blues sound that thrums with Mississippi and Louisiana flavours.
