Local Scene: Rye
As mentioned above, Rye lives in Newcastle but she’s actually from Vilnius in Lithuania where she grew up immersed in experimental rock, underground electronic music and the Lithuanian tradition of sung poetry. Her debut EP ‘I Feel Everything’ came out last year and as calling-cards go it’s a real doozy. The title track is a gorgeous slice of cinematic trip-hop that ebbs and swells in the subtlest of manners, but there are delights elsewhere on ‘I Feel Everything’ wherever you look. ‘June’ for instance features roomy shuffle-beats and guitar work that spirals up into the clouds, while ‘Everything’s Fallin’ Apart’ is a sparse ballad – Rye’s voice very much to the fore. And what a voice! Combining fragility and strength in equal measure, it’s a thing of beauty. Of the release Rye comments: “The central message of ‘I Feel Everything’ is: pain is inevitable but you don’t have to be consumed by it. It comes and goes.” This lass is a real talent and I can’t wait to hear what she does next.
