Joni Mitchell in the house

Welsh singer/songwriters Kathryn Pepper and Paul Zervas have won plaudits aplenty for their tribute to Joni Mitchell ‘This Flight Tonight’, and they’re bringing the show back to Sunderland’s Fire Station this January.

Kathryn Pepper and Paul Zervas have won cult acclaim right across Europe for their original material, but the acclaimed duo have also achieved standing ovations for their Joni Mitchell tribute. Presented by a five-piece band, the concerts see them hosting an intimate evening of some of Mitchell’s best-loved pieces – played as they would have been performed when they were first minted. Mitchell, of course, is one of the most influential artists of the modern age and for five decades and more she has pushed at the boundaries of songcraft and artistry. Pepper’s vocals meanwhile – which take in clarity of expression, intonation, distinctive vibrato and a resonant lower register – have seen her win much praise, and you definitely need to have a certain something if you’re going to tackle tracks such as ‘California’, ‘Blue’, ‘Woodstock’, ‘Both Sides Now’, ‘Carey’ and ‘Coyote’. Pepper and Zervas were a wow when they played The Fire Station last February, and it’s little surprise they’re back again so soon. GM

This Flight Tonight, Sunday 26 January, The Fire Station, Sunderland, 7.30pm, from £23, thefirestation.org.uk
