House about that

‘Paxton House: Crossing Borders’ at the Granary Gallery in Berwick reveals how the history of this magnificent Georgian house and its beautiful setting entwines the people of Berwick and the Borderlands.

Patrick Home built Paxton House on a new site high above the river Tweed in 1758 and today it remains one of the finest Palladian houses in the country, a “gentlemen’s residence” designed to show the taste, wealth and position of Home – who inherited a fortune from his parents. This show tells the story of the Home family, who owned the house for over 250 years, through splendid costume, furniture, family history and paintings (such as Alexander Nasmyth’s ‘Paxton House Union Bridge over the Tweed’ – pictured). It’s also an opportunity to discover the secrets and stories of this fascinating building – Berwick’s “hidden gem”, just over the border.
