Skinner - New Wave Vaudeville
You’ve heard of new wave, but have you heard of no wave? It’s the genre that up-and-coming Irish artist Skinner identifies with and is an avant-garde mix of funk, disco, jazz and noise that was developed in 1970s in response to new wave becoming mainstream. Such inspiration makes for a maximalist, colourful album, with chaotic layers of multi-instrumental sound piled up in a way that is somewhat dissonant, but just works. Among all the madness, Skinner pens sharp, frank lyrics on the human experience that grounds his eccentricity in reality. Bonkers, but brilliant. LT
