Reimagining landscape

Artists Jane Gower, Omi Pharncote and Jenny Purrett connect with the landscape – and each other – for a fabulous new exhibition, which you can see at The Gallery in Gateshead Central Library.

This pic shows Jenny Gower and Omi Pharncote working on a drawing (Jenny Purrett is out of shot) that is eight metres in length. The materials they’re using include soil, charcoal and earth pigments that are rubbed into the paper. They’ve also fashioned an image of a tree on the surface by using their bare limbs. Talk about getting back to nature. But the three artists have sought to connect with landscape, and each other, in wholly original ways for this exhibition, which also sees them presenting solo pieces, too. Gower creates ephemeral sculptures made in the landscape from natural materials found on her journey, while Pharncote works in felt, often incorporating textures and found materials. Purrett’s drawings, meanwhile, capture the vitality of nature through tree portraits and delicate use of pigment. The result is a surprising and illuminating show that was developed over the course of a year. RM
