This non-binary rising star has been creating quite a buzz in their native Canada; and they’ve certainly backed up all that interest with a debut album that grabs the Americana template and then does some rather thrilling things with it. They have the melodic nous of HAIM (think: a wintery rather than a sunny HAIM), but also the slacker charm of Courtney Barnett, the soul-baring introspection of Nick Drake, the indie-pop chops of Rilo Kiley, and the twang of Kacey Musgraves. Covering everything from queer love to grief and addiction, CJ Wiley is one of the most arresting new voices on the scene. RM
