Sharon Van Etten shakes things up on her first album with her new band. Despite being a reinvention, it feels nostalgic: post-punk and gothic motifs run throughout, with synth melodies intertwined with groovy basslines and guitar riffs that wouldn’t feel out of place on an album from New Order. Van Etten’s vocals take on a chameleon quality, adapting to the varied moods in each of the songs; from an ethereal falsetto in ‘Live Forever’ to a reverbed drone in ‘Southern Life’. This is an absolute treat for fans of 80s post-punk looking for something new. LT
