Ollie Jude, lead singer of Brighton’s Squid, has described this third album as “like a book of dark fairytales”, and it is indeed like flicking through some of the uncanniest Grimm tales. The chaotic, expansive production and woozy groove of their guitar melodies pair wonderfully with the songs’ dark subject matter, which explores the nature of human evil via stories of cannibalism, the downfalls of fame and our disturbing fascination with true crime. It’s a claustrophobic listen, but also a captivating one that you can’t pull away from. LT
