Wild west Byker

Harry Lawson’s ‘Stepney Western’ recasts Byker as the Wild West in his new film, which you can see at Newcastle Contemporary Art.

‘Stepney Western’ is an experimental documentary which has been made over the past two years in collaboration with a group of young inner city horse riders from Stepney Banks Stables in Newcastle. The film sits at the porous boundary between fact and fiction, combining recontextualised iPhone clips shot by the riders, archival material from North East Film Archive, and artist/filmmaker Harry Lawson’s own footage (still pictured). The film also includes an original theme tune by local musicians Jayne Dent and Richard Dawson. The exhibition itself also hosts archival photography from the likes of Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, Richard Blosse, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Tish Murtha, Chris Killip and more.
