JENNIE is the final member of K-pop’s Blackpink to go solo, closely following her band mates who all released their debuts in quick succession. An impressive roster of collaborators including Dua Lipa, Doechii and Childish Gambino are called upon to deliver 15 tracks that are in the same vein as Blackpink’s ‘tough girl’ attitude, but with a renewed flavour courtesy of JENNIE’s undeniable charisma. Pulsating beats, thunderous basslines and distorted synths combine with her cutthroat delivery to create a string of feel-good anthems that exude confidence and girl-power. The album falls flat when she strays away into cliche pop ballads, but it’s encouraging to see her experiment with new sounds. LT
