Local Scene: Decrepit Youths

Do Newcastle’s Decrepit Youths look like they do things by half? (Answer: no.)

There’s a moment midway through Decrepit Youths’ song ‘Black Dove’, when the monumental riffs drop out of the mix and a Geordie voice implores: “If this torture is so goddamn painful, then why does it feel so good?” This is then met with pounding beats and a vocal which teeters towards the theatrical: “I can’t put my finger on, why we are so fucking dumb!” It’s a moment to treasure, one of many on Decrepit Youths’ three-track debut EP, and it speaks of a band who have arrived seemingly fully formed. Elsewhere on the EP we get the wired title track ‘Love Psycho Killer Machine’, which mixes an edgy, alt-rocking urgency with the kind of fiery melody that would put a bomb under any passing mosh-pit, and ‘Monster in Me’, another track that marries the band’s undoubted songwriting chops to an arena destroying chorus. The band draw on a range of influences – including Royal Blood, Don Broco etc – but they also stir plenty of other interesting ingredients into their already feisty pot. This year, watch ‘em go. DP
