Local Scene: Hayley McKay

Durham-based Hayley McKay knows how to wear the hell out of a pair of trousers – does she not? She’s also one of the brightest stars on the UK country music scene.

The sterling work that Hayley McKay has been doing on the Americana/country front hasn’t gone unnoticed. Indeed, she already has a clutch of awards to her name including the Hot Country TV ‘UK Entertainer of the Year’ trophy, and the ‘International Single of the Year’ from the ISSA awards in Atlanta. She’s also garnered much praise from the national press who can’t get enough of her brand of country, which is imbued with a real breezy warmth and charm, all of it underpinned by her creamy vocal. And she’s a real dab hand at penning stirring anthems, too, such as ‘Adrenaline’, a soaring track that was inspired by her friend Lyndon Longhorne – a Paralympian and quadruple amputee who is challenging himself to break records when he does the Amputee Ironman challenge later this year in order to raise funds for Men’s Mental Health and the Meningitis Charity. McKay is a singer/songwriter with real heart, and good things can only come to those who let her music into their lives. DP
