Something jazzy is stirring

Newcastle’s Nauta are being talked about in hushed tones in jazz circles and with good reason – they’re immense. What’s more, they’re all set to host an exciting new night at Gateshead’s The Central bar – beginning early May.

I’ve no hesitation in labelling Nauta ‘The Real Deal’. The Newcastle quintet only formed in 2023 but they’ve already grabbed themselves a healthy slice of the regional jazzy pie, performing their lyrical and mood-enhancing original material at the likes of the Hexham Jazz Festival and The Globe in Newcastle. Among their ranks they number Jacob Egglestone (jazz guitarist who also plays with SwanNek and Bold Big Band), Louis Wild (keyboard, Louis has been responsible for the soundtracks of multiple award-winning short films), Olly Styles (saxophone and currently studying music at Newcastle University), Bailey Rudd (on drums, he’s played everywhere from BBC Proms to Kendal Calling) and Jamie Watkins (trained on classical guitar before switching to bass six years ago). Their new monthly night is ‘Nauta’s House’ and it will feature the finest musicians from both sides of the Tyne. You know what to do (i.e. check it out). DP
