Top of the Bill(ingham)

Billingham’s finest Megson are one of the most lauded folk duos in the UK, and their latest tour sees them swinging by the Queen’s Hall Arts Centre in Hexham and ARC in Stockton.

Megson have been delighting us folk fans for twenty years now and, as their last album ‘What Are We Trying To Say?’ showed, they remain at the very height of their powers. Featuring some glorious harmonies, and pointed lyrical concerns that mix the personal, historical and political, it’s a release that is also overflowing with glorious melodies, the kind that stay lodged in your head. It’s little wonder that the pair have been nominated four times at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. They’re also double winners at the Spiral Earth Awards. They have thirteen studio albums under their belts now which have garnered them a trail of glittering reviews including from the Guardian who opined: “The most original duo on the British folk scene.” They’re absolutely captivating live, so see them every chance you get. Megson: Thursday 10 April, Queen’s Hall Arts Centre, Hexham, 7.30pm, from £18, queenshall.co.uk; Saturday 12 April, ARC, Stockton, 8pm, from £19.50, arconline.co.uk
