Fall under folk supergroup’s spell
If you’re on the look out for an inspirational and uplifting and hopeful homage to the natural world, then you need this performance in your life, pronto. It’s set to be presented by the multifaceted talents and collaborative genius of Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux, who, together, form the force of nature that is Spell Songs. Renowned for their enthralling live performances, this very special ensemble blend a diverse array of sounds that encompass everything from kora to electroharp, Indian harmonium to cello, and their gorgeously layered influences run the gamut from Orkney to Senegal. Tonight they’ll be giving us their take on Robert Macfarlane’s and Jackie Morris’s ‘The Lost Words’ and ‘The Lost Spells’ – the best selling nature books. What’s more, artist Jackie Morris will be on stage with them conjuring up nature pictures with watercolour and ink as the band weave their magic. This is a night when music, literature, language and art will combine in ways that will truly fire your love of the wild.
The Lost Words: Spell Songs, Saturday 17 May, The Glasshouse, Gateshead, 7.30pm, £33.20, theglasshouseicm.org
