Blooming marvellous
I’ve been eagerly feasting on Floral Image’s early singles and EPs with relish over the last year or so. They feed my need for psychedelic sounds that come gift-wrapped in sugar-rush melodies that lift you to another place, a wilder place. And they’ve followed up all the early promise of those first recordings with their glorious ‘Gone Down Meadowland’ album, which shimmered into my life this spring. It’s a release that shows that the band know how to pull off that rare trick of being tight but with a free-wheeling air, and those super soaraway melodies just tumble out of them. Of the album they say: “Barns, basements and box-rooms across Norfolk were all utilised to unearth the songs from the soil of our collective minds. We practically lived with each other and buried ourselves in the music for what was almost a whole half-year.” Whatever they did, it’s paid off in spades because ‘Gone Down Meadowland’ is sure to be one of my most cherished albums of 2025.
