Clear Mortifee - Fairies: Act II

Alt R&B artist Clear Mortifee’s latest release is full of bouncy hip-hop beats, a delightful mix of electronic and instrumental melodies, and a spectrum of vocals that range from defiant rap lines to sweet, breathy trills. However, this EP goes deeper than a collection of groovy bops. Clear, who is trans/non-binary and uses they/he pronouns, provides a personal and raw exploration of gender identity (I’m obsessed with the line “I don’t sell sea shells on the sea shore / Please don’t call me she no more” from ‘C Shells’). While ‘M@n Like That’ and ‘Honey Boy’ are full of romance, ‘Teeth’ recounts a toxic relationship, showing the variety of their songwriting talent. LT
