Man Enough to be a Woman by Jayne Country
Man Enough To Be Woman is the new autobiography from Jayne County,
transgender punk rocker and pioneer, best known as the lead singer of
Wayne County and the Electric Chairs. Growing up openly gender
nonconforming in Georgia in the 60s and 70s, County’s experiences
feel light years away from the queer experience today, with ten
different versions of drag race airing and boys in dresses making the
cover of Vogue. While
the writing isn’t exactly impressive, the opposite can be said for
County’s fifty year long career as a musician and actress. Her
story is one of resilience, of being unashamedly herself until the
rest of the world caught up. Her insights on queer identity,
music and drag make the book a worthwhile read for any young LGBTQ+
person looking to educate themselves on our history. MG
