Kalme is Berlin-based Sonja Deffner (singing in German), who has previously worked with a number of groups. She’s also an artist and has acted on stage. Her debut album is a real envelope-pusher, evolving out of avant-pop and R&B into areas that take in electronics via dub techno. It also includes field recordings and acoustic instrumentation (clarinet, percussion) for a release that might have been a difficult listen but really isn’t. A real find. DP
