Tomberlin is Sarah Beth Tomberline – a pastor’s kid born in Florida and raised in rural Illinois – who has gained something of a cult following due to her emotionally raw and sparse debut album (2018’s ‘At Weddings’). This is just as good. It’s still roomy – instrumentation coming from pedal steel, old acoustic guitars, piano trills, drifting synths – but her melodies are a crystalline as ever. And she has a keen turn of phrase that really stays with you. If you’ve not yet had the pleasure, well now is the perfect time to check her out. JL
