Billingham’s Phil Smart – in his guise of To Kill A Nation – has enthralled us in the past with his electronica, and now he’s back with his second full album. It’s been two years in the making and, pleased to report, it’s certainly been worth the wait. He creates wonderful soundscapes – which are melodic and stuffed full of interesting textures – and the mood here is very 4am. From the beautiful and cathartic drone of ‘Heal Your Broken Heart’, to the exoticisms of ‘La Choza’ and ‘Breathe Life’, to the atmospheric ‘Mississippi’ (which uses sampled speech to great effect), this is a release that really lives with you.
