When three of UK’s most distinctive folk practitioners get together – Marry Waterson, Lisa Knapp and Nathaniel Mann – you’d expect fireworks, and this album doesn’t disappoint. The twelve tracks here – a mix of original compositions and interpretations of historic broadside ballads – are, sonically, incredibly inventive: stirring, gothic, incantatory, haunting. And these tales – taking in everything from class struggle to ancient myths – have a timeless air. Superb. RM
