How to Have Sex
Stars: Mia McKenna-Bruce, Lara Peake, Enva Lewis, Shaun Thomas, Samuel Bottomley, Laura Ambler
Molly Manning-Walker’s impressively assured feature debut charts an exhaustingly hedonistic week’s holiday for a trio of sixteen-year-old Brit women and its sour comedown. Their A-levels just out of the way, Skye (Peake), Em (Lewis) and the ebullient Tara (McKenna-Bruce) are determined to have a week of fun, booze and sex in Crete. After their first wild night of clubbing, they meet their chalet neighbours, amiable builder bloke Badger (Thomas), his not-so amiable mate Paddy (Bottomley) and their lesbian pal Paige (Ambler). Manning-Walker effectively charts the relentless exhausting neon-lit heat and flash of a package holiday as the party mill grinds on, then deftly alters the register to something darker as Tara’s determination to lose her virginity places her in harrowing situations. It’s a commendably sophisticated and nuanced drama revolving around notions of consent, and it boasts a star-making turn from McKenna-Bruce as cheeky but vulnerable Tara.
