St James Infirmary - Artefacts: Sacred and Profane
Over the years dozens of bandmates have swirled around Ashington’s
g.w. lang under the St James Infirmary banner, and his latest release
features contributions from Richard Dawson, Nev Clay and Cath &
Phil Tyler. And the results are fantastic. From Lankum-like
enrapturing drones (‘Cuddy’s Cave’ – a track that namechecks
“Shields Road’s Wilco”) to freakbeat positively thrumming with
hallelujah vibes (‘Northumbrian Rapture (All God’s Children
Headin’ Up To The Sky’) to gently fried psych pop (‘The Depths
Of Sky’) to wonky C86 (‘Four Paths’) this is a release
absolutely shimmering with treasure. RM
