The Other Tenant by Lesley Kara
Guardian Angels is an organisation that looks after buildings that are currently unoccupied. They do this by placing temporary residents inside the properties in order to deter squatters and vandals etc. Marlow is a woman on their books and after a happy stint bedding down in an old church, she is tasked with minding an old school. The school has been bought by a property developer who, eventually, hopes to turn it into flats etc. Trouble is, the school is Marlow’s old school and it holds unhappy memories for her. There’s also the fact that, given the school’s size, she’s not the only Guardian Angel onsite, and many of them have their own particular issues. Lesley’s Kara’s latest twisty psychological thriller is pretty thin on characterisation, but she knows how to keep things moving as she piles up the revelations. Fans of the genre will race through it, but probably struggle to recall much about it a week later. RM
