Employment Roulette at the Live Theatre
It’s educational as well as entertaining, with shocking statistics projected onto the screen behind the performers. Given that only 5% of learning disabled adults are in paid employment, their clear frustration is very understandable - they don’t want your sympathy, they want to work.
Aided by a team of facilitators, each performer has a chance to express themselves and communicate their ambitions, their barriers to achieving those ambitions, and what can be done to help break down these barriers and allow them to reach their full potential. Some of these accommodations, such as help on public transport or a chat with a careers advisor, are incredibly simple but would make the world of difference.
Like many autistic people, I know firsthand how difficult the job market can be when you require accommodations. I can only hope that attitudes will change, and that somebody will give these promising performers a chance.
