Historic battle

Jeremy Deller’s ‘The Battle of Orgreave (An Injury to One is an Injury to All)’ is coming to the NGCA in Sunderland this June.

The Miners’ Strike, of course, had a profound and long-lasting effect on the north-east, and to mark the 40th anniversary of that dispute, NGCA Collection Space is screening ‘The Battle of Orgreave’, Mike Figgis’ film of Jeremy Deller’s re-enactment of the violent confrontation between police and miners outside the coking plant at Orgreave in South Yorkshire – which was one of the most crucial episodes of the strike. Also on display will be a selection of photographs taken during the strike including photos of pickets at Monkwearmouth and Easington Collieries, as well as marches and demonstrations in Sunderland.
