Ora Cogan - Formless
Tagging an artist with the word ‘experimental’ often suggests an output that sounds like someone tunelessly banging a kettle. Not so for this Canadian singer/songwriter. Her new album is a real eye-opener, expanding Americana to take in post-punk, psych and heart-in-the-mouth balladry to stunning effect. It’s a real grab-bag collection, also touching on alt-country and ethereal groove, but the album, taken as a whole, is well worth investing time in. Some people call it “folkgaze” and I can live with that. RM
