Kin and tonic

‘Kith and Kinship’ at the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle highlights some works by Norman Cornish and LS Lowry that have often been overlooked.

If you’re looking for a representation of tenderness in an artwork, then I doubt you’ll find a much better example than this gorgeous piece (pictured) by Norman Cornish. Entitled ‘Sarah telling John a Bedtime Story’, it captures with exquisite economy a mother’s love for her son. And it’s just one of the pieces you can see at this show which features work from both Cornish and LS Lowry that, in particular, celebrate the region’s playful recreation activities along with our distinctive industry and emotive landscapes. Working with people from the communities they depict, the museum will build new and varied interpretations of the works.
