Power to the people

‘People’s Art’ is an exhibition at the NGC Gallery in Sunderland that celebrates art created by unnamed artists.

This image shows a late 19th Welsh quilt (collection of Jen Jones) and it’s just one of the many fascinating items you can see at this show which gives a platform to Popular Art or Folk Art. These pieces were often beautiful, but functional parts of everyday life. They reflect our economic and social history and were often remarkably well made – hence the fact that they are still around for us to enjoy today. ‘People’s Art’ aims to elevate the profile of Popular Art and has commissioned five contemporary artists to respond to selected objects loaned from Compton Verney’s Folk Art collection and from a private collection. These works will be on show alongside the loans.

People’s Art, until 1 December, NGC Gallery, Sunderland, sunderlandculture.org.uk
