Disclosure: Cigarettes After Sex are in fact my favourite band. Perhaps this makes my review biased, but – honestly! – this is fab. X’s is brimming with the kind of decadent romance you’d expect from an album inspired by classic, sensual cinema (frontman Greg Gonzales even created a list of 25 films that influenced the album on Letterboxd). It’s softer than previous releases - in instrumentation, vocals and lyrical content - and though it is missing some of the characteristic darkness that makes their love songs so compelling, X’s soundscape of pure sweetness is utterly captivating.
