Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson is one of the best books I have ever read, and I devoured it in no time. This utterly beautiful yet heartbreaking novel follows two young Black artists in London, both of whom remain unnamed. The story delves into the male protagonist’s struggles with identity and masculinity, all while depicting the unfolding love between the two main characters and the challenges they face from the world around them. Nelson masterfully weaves personal experiences with a political perspective, highlighting how systemic racism necessarily politicises the everyday lives of Black people. His writing is truly magical and captivating, with expressions so vivid that emotions pour off the page. Despite its brevity, this book is incredibly powerful and a must-read for everyone. Open Water is a small but mighty novel that invites readers to reflect deeply on love, identity, and the impact of societal structures on personal lives.
